Conservation Overlay Zoning
Conservation overlay zoning is a tool used by many communities to protect sensitive local environmental features. Overlay zoning creates a special zoning district in which an additional set of regulations or incentives is added on top of the primary zoning district rules. Overlays may be applied to regulate development in stream corridors, wildlife habitats, drinking water watersheds, scenic ridgelines, and a variety of other environmentally sensitive areas.
This webinar will introduce overlay zoning; discuss the process to delineate an overlay zone, define protected features, and select an appropriate regulatory structure to protect target resources; zoning adoption; and enforcement. We will also introduce a new guide to Creating Conservation Overlay Zoning, and an opportunity for in-depth training and assistance.
